Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals emitted by plants, playing essential roles in communication, defense, and environmental adaptation. These compounds can attract pollinators, repel herbivores, or inhibit the growth of competing plants. VOCs are produced in response to biotic and abiotic stressors, acting as signals that can affect not only the emitting plant but also neighboring plants and organisms. For example, when under attack from herbivores, a plant may release specific VOCs that trigger defensive responses in surrounding plants. Understanding VOCs can enhance our knowledge of plant interactions and contribute to developing sustainable pest management strategies.
