UV-B radiation effects on plants

UV-B radiation effects on plants

Ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation, a component of sunlight, can significantly impact plant growth and development. While excessive UV-B exposure can cause cellular damage, leading to impaired photosynthesis and reduced biomass, plants have evolved protective mechanisms to mitigate these effects. These include the production of UV-absorbing compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolics, which act as sunscreens. Additionally, UV-B exposure triggers specific signaling pathways that induce the expression of stress-responsive genes, enhancing plant resilience. Research into the molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to UV-B radiation has implications for understanding plant adaptation to changing climates and optimizing crop performance under variable light conditions.
