Post-Translational Modifications in Plants

Post-Translational Modifications in Plants

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) in plants are biochemical changes to proteins after synthesis, influencing protein function, stability, and localization. PTMs, such as phosphorylation, glycosylation, and ubiquitination, play vital roles in cellular responses to environmental stress, growth, and development. For instance, phosphorylation often regulates enzyme activity in response to drought or pathogen attack. These modifications allow plants to quickly adapt to their surroundings by modulating protein function in real time. Understanding PTMs is essential for plant biotechnology, where enhancing or inhibiting specific modifications can improve stress resilience and productivity.
