Pheromones in plants act as chemical signals that influence the behavior and physiological responses of surrounding organisms, such as herbivores, pollinators, and even neighboring plants. Though traditionally associated with animals, plants release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that function similarly to pheromones. For example, plants attacked by herbivores emit VOCs that attract predators of the herbivores, providing an indirect defense mechanism. Additionally, certain root-secreted chemicals impact neighboring plants, promoting symbiosis or competition. Research on plant pheromones has led to sustainable agricultural practices, using natural plant signaling compounds to attract beneficial insects or deter pests.
