Plant-microbe interactions are essential for the health and functioning of ecosystems worldwide. These interactions are reciprocal: plants provide carbon and other essential nutrients to microbes, while microbes help plants acquire essential nutrients, defend against pathogens, and adapt to environmental stressors. By decomposing organic matter, microbes release nitrogen, phosphorus, and other essential minerals, making them available to plants. In return, plants provide a source of carbon and other nutrients for microbial growth. Additionally, beneficial microbes form associations with plant roots, which help the plant, absorb nutrients and defend against pathogens. These beneficial microbes can also help plants adapt to changing environmental conditions by altering their physiology and biochemistry. Plant-microbe interactions are essential for the sustainability of ecosystems, and understanding these interactions is key to developing sustainable agricultural practices.
