Plant Disease resistance

Plant Disease resistance

Plant disease resistance is the ability of a plant to prevent or mitigate damage caused by pathogens. This resistance can be categorized into two main types: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative resistance is often governed by single genes and provides complete protection against specific pathogens, while quantitative resistance involves multiple genes that offer partial protection against a range of pathogens. Breeding programs aim to enhance disease resistance through conventional methods or biotechnological approaches, such as marker-assisted selection. Understanding the genetic basis of disease resistance enables the development of resilient crop varieties, crucial for sustaining agricultural productivity in the face of emerging plant diseases.
