Non-coding RNAs in plants

Non-coding RNAs in plants

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play essential regulatory roles in plant development and stress responses. Unlike protein-coding RNAs, ncRNAs include microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), which participate in gene expression regulation and chromatin remodeling. For instance, miRNAs are involved in post-transcriptional regulation, influencing processes such as leaf development and stress tolerance. Recent advances in sequencing technologies have uncovered the complexity of ncRNA networks in plants, revealing their potential in mediating responses to environmental stresses. Understanding the functions of non-coding RNAs offers promising avenues for genetic engineering and breeding strategies aimed at improving plant resilience and adaptability.
