Mycotoxins in plant crops

Mycotoxins in plant crops

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain types of fungi that can contaminate plant crops, especially under humid and warm conditions. These toxins, such as aflatoxins and ochratoxins, are hazardous to human and animal health if ingested. They can damage liver and kidney functions and have been linked to immune suppression and carcinogenic effects. Preventing mycotoxin contamination involves implementing good agricultural practices, such as crop rotation, proper irrigation, and timely harvests. Additionally, biological controls and genetic approaches are being explored to develop crops resistant to fungal infestation. Effective management of mycotoxins is essential for ensuring food safety, reducing economic losses, and maintaining the health of ecosystems.
