Calcium signaling in plants

Calcium ions play a pivotal role in cellular signaling processes in plants, acting as second messengers in response to various environmental stimuli. Calcium signaling is involved in diverse physiological processes, including stomatal closure, root growth, and stress responses. When plants experience abiotic stress, such as drought or salinity, calcium channels in the plasma membrane facilitate the influx of calcium ions, triggering a cascade of downstream signaling events. Research has shown that manipulating calcium signaling pathways can enhance plant tolerance to environmental stresses. This understanding opens avenues for developing stress-resistant crops through genetic engineering or traditional breeding methods.
