Title : Aspects of Agronomy Research in the Sudan

Abstract:

Increase in production can be achieved through increased acreage, which means horizontal intensification; or increased productivity per unit area- which is vertical intensification. Increased productivity may be through improved cultural practices, use of good quality seeds and all crop husbandry requirements.

Objectives of agronomy research mainly aim at: increasing production, improving quality of the product, reducing production cost and improving livelihood of farmers.

Accordingly, agronomy research may be categorized into:

  1. Cereal crops research, which is sub-divided to include the main cereal crops of the Sudan i.e. wheat, sorghum and pearl millet.
  2. Oil crops research to emphasize on: sesame and groundnuts.
  3. Pulse crops research to deal with faba beans, kidney beans and lentils.

The presentation will emphasize on the current situation of research of each of the above mentioned crop, constraints facing the research and future aspects of these research programs in the Sudan.
