Title : The effect of the holy basil (Ocimum sanctum L.) crude extract on the seed germination and growth of khao dawk mali 105, mung beans, ruzi grass and spinach.

Abstract:

Weeds are one of the common problems in the agriculture field which can damage the growth and yield of agriculture products. Currently, chemical pesticides are widely used to solve the issue. But those chemicals are hazardous to environment. This research’s objective was to study the phenolic compounds of the Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum L.) leaves crude extract effect on The seed germination and growth of khao dawk Mali 105 and mung beans which are the product crops compare with ruzi grass and spinach which consider as weeds. The result showed that the highest concentration of phenolic compounds in the Holy basil crude extract as high as 206.45 mg GAE/g of extract when using water as a solvent (among hexane, chloroform, and ethanol). Then, study the effect of the crude extract with various concentration on khao dawk Mali 105, mung beans, ruzi grass, and Spinach seed germination and growth. The concentrations of the crude extract were 0, 1.25, 1.6, 2.5, and 5 percent (w/v). The study found that all concentrations of the crude extract did not affect khao dawk mali 105 and mung beans germination (crop product). On the other hand, ruzi grass and spinach germination were decreased when exposed to the crude extract. While the growth (stem high, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight) and the amount of Malondialdehyde (indicated the plants stress) of four plant were decrease as the crude extract concentration increase. In summary, this study can indicate that O. sanctum L. as a herbicides in stead of harmful chemical in short future.

Keywords: Ocimum sanctum L., seed germination, plant growth, leaf crude extract

Audience Takeaway:

  • Identify the solvent that can yield highest concentration of phenolic compounds
  • Holy basil leaf extract can inhibit germination of weeds but not agricultural product.
  • This result may allow holy basil leaf extract to be applied as herbicides instead of using chemicals in short future. Farmers and others can use this research for agriculture.
