Biography:
Andrés Germán Sierra Quitian holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas and a master’s degree in chemistry from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is currently in his first year of the Doctoral program at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, conducting research focused on the characterization of the antimicrobial potential of Colombian plant species against skin pathogens. His research experience lies in the field of natural products, encompassing extraction, isolation, and synthesis of bioactive compounds from plant sources. He has participated in studies aimed at the isolation of secondary metabolites, including prenylated benzoic acid derivatives and monoterpenoids, as well as the chemical modification of functional groups and their subsequent biological evaluation. Notable biological models he has worked with include Pseudomonas aeruginosa (inhibition of virulence factors from extracts and isolated compounds of Piper bogotense), Rhipicephalus microplus (acaricidal activity of essential oils) and Tribolium castaneum and Sitophilus zeamais (insecticidal and repellent activity, including formulations encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin). Currently, his work focuses on evaluating the antimicrobial potential of extracts, fractions, and compounds against microorganisms associated with skin infections, such as Malassezia furfur, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida albicans and Trichophyton rubrum.
